As part of efforts to develop a communication tool for Gender Statistics under the Harmonizing and Improving Statistics in West Africa Project (HISWAP), the Research, Statistics, and Information Management (RSIM) Directorate of the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP), in collaboration with the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), hosted a one-day zonal stakeholders’ engagement on Tuesday, 15th October 2024, in the Eastern Region.
This initiative aims to bridge the gap between data generation and effective communication by creating a tool that facilitates the production and use of gender statistics, making the information accessible and relevant to a wide range of stakeholders.
The key objectives of the workshop included gathering valuable input from stakeholders to guide the development of the communication tool. The engagement sought to foster a shared understanding of the challenges involved and inspire innovative approaches to designing a tool that is both accessible and impactful.
Speaking at the workshop on behalf of the Deputy Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Hon. Benjamin Yeboah Sekyere, the Director of the RSIM Directorate, Dr. Sylvester Kyei-Gyamfi, emphasized that the tool will strengthen evidence-based decision-making and policy formulation in areas that affect the lives of the vulnerable, helping to address the systemic inequalities that persist in the country.
He stated that the tool will be instrumental in achieving national development priorities and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5, which focuses on gender equality.
Dr. Kyei-Gyamfi, therefore, encouraged all participants to engage actively, stressing that gender equality is not just a women’s issue but a societal issue, and that every individual stands to benefit from a more equal and inclusive society through the development of the gender statistics communication tool.
In a remark delivered on behalf of the Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, Principal Research Officer from RSIM, Madam Gloria Ayorkor Charway, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to making the gender statistics tool a cornerstone of its development agenda. She noted that the tool will provide a deeper understanding of gender roles, responsibilities, and issues affecting individuals across the country.
The toolkit will outline a clear strategy for communicating gender statistics to users and producers, featuring relevant illustrations and key messages tailored to the target audience.
