As part of a two (2) day technical observation visit to Ghana to assess the country’s preparedness for full membership of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), the West African Representative of the OIF, Amb. Thi Hoang Mai Tran, held a meeting with the Coordinating Director in charge of Political & Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Amb. Hannah Nyarko, at the Ministry.
In her welcome remarks, Amb. Hannah Nyarko stated that, the presence of Amb. Tran in Ghana represented a significant step forward in Ghana’s aspiration to attain full membership after eighteen (18) active years as an Associate Member. It is anticipated that Ghana’s application for full membership would be approved at the upcoming OIF Summit scheduled to be held in Paris in October, 2024. Ghana’s application for a change in status reflects the Government’s strategic decision to promote the French language as a tool to deepen cultural ties and increase trade with neighbouring Francophone countries, those across the African continent and beyond. Furthermore, the ability of Ghanaians to communicate in the French language would contribute to Africa’s integration agenda.
Amb. Thi Hoang Mai expressed her pleasure with Ghana’s decision to become a full member of the OIF adding that the decision was pivotal in the reinforcement of the cooperation between Ghana and the OIF. She reiterated that given Ghana’s commitment towards the core values of the OIF including peace, human rights and the rule of law, the decision to become a full member is in the right direction. Additionally, Ghana has invaluable experience in the areas of peacekeeping and democratic governance to share with the members of the OIF.
Present at the meeting were officials from the Ministry as well as members of the Committee in charge of Ghana’s bid to become a Full Member of the OIF from the Ministry of Education and the Presidency.
