A 22 year old special needs student is writing the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)
examination with a pen in his mouth.
Mohammed Usif is a student at Wenchi in the Bono region. He is a student with disability and was seen
by our correspondent sitting on a wheelchair using pen held in his mouth to write the paper.
He is a student from Imam Seidu "B" Islamic Basic School at Wenchi in the Bono Region.
Narrating his ordeal to our correspondent, Mohammed Usif he said that he started using a pen in the
mouth to write when he was in primary four.
"I used my hands to write when I was a child, but the situation I found myself makes me to use my
mouth to hold the pen to write,” he said.
When asked how he it feels when he uses the pen in his mouth to write Usif said he was comfortable
with the situation.
“I managed to write the papers with the situation on first day of the exam. Today which happens to be
day two of the exam I have finished writing the science paper 1 but the questions were plenty and
difficult but I managed to write,” he explained.
“Now that I am writing my BECE I know definitely I will pass the exam and further my education to the
Senior High School. I want to pass because it is my brother who assists me in my outgoing and incoming
but he too is still at the junior high school. Now who is going to assist me when I get to the SHS”
Mohammed Usif wondered.
He therefore appealed to the government, NGOs, philanthropists to come to his aid to enable him
further his education.
Mrs. Mary Nyarko Adutwum, the Wenchi Municipal Director of the Ghana Education
Service commended Usif for his boldness in participating in the exam.
“When I saw him I decided to motivate him not to underrate himself but when I get closer to him he has
rather motivated himself,” Mrs. Mary Nyarko Adutwum noted.
She added her voice by appealing to well-meaning Ghanaians to come to the aid Mohammed.
