The Poultry Farmers Association of Wenchi in the Bono Region has submitted a petition to the National
Democratic Congress (NDC) and its 2024 Presidential candidate calling for solutions to address
challenges facing the poultry farmers when elected into government.
“Our association faces several challenges that require urgent attention and support and we are eager to
discuss these matters with you in more detail,” portions of the letter presented to the NDC by the
association reads.
They outlined several challenges they face such as Youth Unemployment and the influx of imported
frozen chicken.
According to the association the increasing cost of production within the poultry industry has led to Youth
Unemployment has impeded their ability to provide employment opportunities for the youth which has led
to a rising unemployment rates negatively impacting the country's overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
They stated that the influx of imported frozen chicken has created an unfavorable market environment for
local poultry producers, high feed production cost, the soaring cost of imported feed ingredients and
drugs have resulted in the collapse of many poultry businesses.
They said that developing a self-sufficient poultry industry will reduce the need for extensive importation,
resulting in significant saving of foreign exchange for the nation.
In light of these consideration the Wenchi Poultry Association requested the support and advocacy for
policies that will alleviate the challenges faced by the poultry industry in the next Mahama government
The association presented their petition to former President John Dramani Mahama when he and the
NDC leadership took their Building Ghana Together tour to Wenchi in the Bono Region.
