We Would Reduce Poverty by Tackling Inequality and Improving Access to Opportunities- Gender Minister

The Minister for Gender and Member of Parliament for Walewale Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu has stated that government recognizes that sustained poverty reduction requires a commitment to reducing inequality and improving access to opportunities for all citizens.

In this direction, government would this week remove the mandatory one-month waiting period for new aged NHIS subscribers for persons 70 years and above, thus allowing persons in that category to enjoy instant access to healthcare from all NHIS accepted health facilities as soon as they enroll on the scheme. 

By this, persons in that category can immediately access health care as soon as they enroll on the scheme.

She further explained that an amount of GHC54.7 million has been disbursed to 344,389 LEAP beneficiary households nationwide for the 77th and 78th cycle benefitting over 1.5million Ghanaians.

“Surely, we believe that this is a major step in as far as poverty reduction is concerned,” she said.

Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu has stated that 50 female farmers in the Bolgatanga Municipality, UE/R have been given 6,000 layer of chicken under the government’s Rearing for Food and Jobs programme with each of them receiving 120 layers, 12 bags of feed for use for three months as well as veterinary service package of antibiotics and vitamins for treatment of the birds.

Still in the area of reducing poverty, she stated that plastic waste recycling facility established at Maledjor in the Adentan municipality under the Waste to Wages Project with the target of training the youth and persons with disability (PWDs) in plastic recycling. She said that this is a step that would reduce the poverty of many PWDs in the Adentan and Maledjor area.

Still on poverty reduction, she stated that as part of efforts to increase LPG use in households to 50% by 2030, the government has started a project to distribute two million cookstoves and related accessories to households across the country. 

“These projects are tangible and verifiable and show the government’s commitment to developing Ghana for all Ghanaians in a period of worldwide economic challenges. We must all take full advantage of these projects to accelerate development,” she stated.
