She joins the Washington D.C. side following one season with Swedish first division team Kristianstads DFF, where she logged two goals and one assist in 22 matches.

“The Washington Spirit is a club that really resonates with my values. It kind of feels like I’m coming home even though it’s a new challenge,” said Carle.

“I’ve heard great things about Washington, D.C. It has a great culture and is a great sports city and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Internationally, Carle has represented the Canadian Women’s National Team since her debut in 2015. She currently holds 30 caps, after being named to the 2019 World Cup team and acting as an alternate for last year’s team at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“Gabby brings so much versatility to our team and will be an excellent addition to our roster for 2023,” Mark Krikorian, president of soccer operations, said in a release. “We’re looking forward to welcoming her to the Spirit as well as the NWSL.”

The Washington Spirit are looking to rebuild and strengthen their roster following a disappointing 2022 NWSL campaign. The team concluded the regular season in 11th place on the table, with just 19 points from 22 games and a record of 3W-9L-10D.
