Vinicius Junior responds to judgement delivered on racist chanting

Vinicius Junior has delivered a withering response to the Spanish Justice Department’s verdict on the racist abuse aimed at the Real Madrid during a club match earlier this season.

The incident occurred during September’s Madrid derby, with Atletico Madrid fans filmed before the match singing “Vinicius, you are a monkey.”

Things escalated during the game when Vinicius and teammate Rodrygo celebrated Real Madrid’s opening goal in the 2-1 win, with thousands of fans heard performing monkey chants at the pair.

However, in an extraordinary verdict delivered this week, the Justice Department announced that there would be no punishment directed at either club or their fans over the incident.

While the Justice Department acknowledged the ‘disrespectful’ and ‘unpleasant’ nature of the chants, they downplayed their severity by highlighting the context of taking place during a hotly-contested football match between rivals.

The verdict has been met by a wave of criticism, with many horrified by the notion that racial abuse could be considered acceptable if it occurs during the setting of a football match.

Following Brazil’s World Cup defeat against Cameroon, Vinicius himself took to Twitter and offered his own thoughts on the verdict.
