The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in the Upper West Region held its 2024 Mid-year Review Meeting at the In-Service Training Centre (ISTC) in Wa.
The meeting was organized to evaluate activities from January to June 2024, share ideas, strategies, and best practices to help the region achieve its key performance indicators by the end of the year.
In his opening address, the Acting Upper West Regional Director, Mr. Samuel Lobber Lekamwe, welcomed all participants and urged them to actively participate in the discussions. He emphasized the need for district staff to outline strategies to improve their membership performance.
The presentation revealed that, as of mid-year, the region had achieved 74% in general membership, 58% in indigent registration, and 64% in population coverage.
The Northern Belt Director, Mr. Titus Sorey, commended the regional management team for organizing the review meeting and praised staff for their sacrifices and dedication. He urged district staff to set up realistic and actionable Programs of Work (POW) to help achieve set targets. Mr. Sorey reaffirmed Executive Management’s commitment to improving staff welfare and providing logistical support to districts to increase membership. He also called on staff to commend facilities that are performing well and to report, with verifiable evidence, those engaged in illegal charges. District managers were encouraged to collaborate with chiefs, assembly members, District Chief Executives (DCEs), and other stakeholders to combat illegal charges at healthcare facilities. He concluded by urging all staff to be ambassadors of the NHIA’s promotive and preventive healthcare agenda, championed by the NHIA’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and encouraged Public Relations Officers (PROs) to regularly write and publish stories about events.
The district presentations highlighted strategies, innovations, challenges, and the outlook for the fourth quarter of 2024.
During the open forum session, participants offered valuable suggestions, shared best practices, and provided constructive feedback, all aimed at helping the region achieve its goals and objectives.
Major challenges affecting the districts’ operations include inadequate staffing at some district offices, poor mobile network connectivity in certain communities, and illegal charges by healthcare providers.
In his closing remarks, the Acting Regional Director encouraged district staff to put in more effort, especially in registering vulnerable groups, to help the region maintain its enviable Universal Health Coverage (UHC) status by the end of 2024.
In attendance were unit heads of the Upper West NHIS Regional Office, all district managers, a representative from each district office, the Northern Belt Director, Mr. Titus Sorey, and the M&E Manager from the Northern Regional Office, Mr. Fuseini Abubakar.
