Chelsea have confirmed that they have reached a ‘final and definitive’ agreement to sell the club to Todd Boehly, whose takeover is expected to be finalised on Monday 30 May.
The Premier League and UK government gave their respective approvals to the deal earlier this week, boosting the chances of the takeover being completed before Chelsea’s current license runs out on May 31.
There have still been small fears that the deal may miss that deadline, but Chelsea released a statement on Saturday to put those concerns to bed.
“Chelsea Football Club can confirm that a final and definitive agreement was entered into last night to sell the Club to the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital consortium,” the club said.
“It is expected that the transaction will be completed on Monday. The Club will update further at that time.”
Chelsea have already been granted a provisional new license which will permit them to begin their transfer dealings as soon as Boehly takes over, with the American readying some sizeable plans to close the gap to Manchester City and Liverpool.
Sources have confirmed to 90min that Chelsea are quietly confident of winning the race to sign Ousmane Dembele on a free transfer from Barcelona, while significant sums of money could be spent on defenders.
Sevilla’s Jules Kounde is top of the list to replace Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen – with a deal to sign the Frenchman expected to be fairly straightforward – and Boehly will then discuss with Thomas Tuchel whether another new signing is needed.
RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol is another on the wish list, while young Levi Colwill is also expected to be given the chance to impress in pre-season after an outstanding loan spell with Championship play-off finalists Huddersfield.
