Reports from the Bono Region suggest that oad crashes have killed nine people from January 2022 until now in the Bono region.

The Bono Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Stephen Tenkorang, disclosed this during a road safety sensitisation programme on Wenchi-based Radio West Africa.

He said 12 road accidents have been recorded during the same period.

ā€œIn all four commercial buses, five private cars and six motorcycles got involved in the various road crashes and further resulted in in 14 injuries,ā€ Superintendent Tenkorang explained.

The Bono Regional MTTD Commander further stated five road accident deaths were recorded in Sunyani while Wenchi recorded four deaths out of road crashes.

He mentioned wrongful overtaken, over-speeding, fatigue, disregard for road traffic regulations as well as alcoholism, and the use of hard drugs, among others, contributing to road crashes across the region.

ā€œIf we are recording such figures so early in the year, then it should be a source of worry to everyone, and we must do something about it as a society,ā€ Superintendent Tenkorang added.

It seems that no matter the level of education that is given out there, some Ghanaians have simply decided that they would continue to behave recklessly on the nationā€™s highways, until they are dead or maimed, and they have killed and maimed others.

Otherwise, one would find it hard to understand why people continue to kill themselves, and others, on our highways.

We believe that the only way to encourage drivers to be responsible on the highways, is for the law to come down hard on recalcitrant drivers found on the wrong side of the law.

This nation can no longer afford the slaughter that we record daily on our roads.
