Mr. Jeff Konadu, Ag. Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), Ghana was over the weekend elected as the Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Eastern region.

The election sent factions aligned to the Minister of Trade and Industry Hon Alan Kyerematen in the upcoming flagbearer primaries of the NPP into ecstasy, with claims that their man had taken over in the Eastern region.

According to Alan’s supporters, the win has stunned the political fraternity in Eastern Region with a historic triumph of his preferred candidate in the ongoing NPP Regional Delegates Congress.

They stated in interviews with the media that the soft spoken politician saw his preferred candidate, Jeff Konadu, winning the chairmanship race at the expense of the alleged candidate of the Jubilee House, Kwadwo Boateng.

They said that the Regional contest, already described as a miniature of the upcoming contest between Dr Mahamud Bawumia and Alan Kyerematen, left many wondering why a pro-Bawumia seat was snatched by Alan’s camp in such commanding manner.

Jeff Konadu, pocketed over 100 percent increment at the expense of Kwadwo Boateng.

With 202 votes amassed at the end of the contest, Kwadwo Boateng fell short of 222 votes as Jeff Konadu rose to the podium with a landslide of 424 votes.

Alan’s supporters told the media that the victory, coupled with other top-ranking positions at the regional level in the Eastern region, left Alan Kyerematen with absolute control ahead of the much anticipated Presidential Primaries.

They stated that with victory in 10 of the sixteen regions already pocketed, the race for the NPP Presidential Primaries might be one-sided rather than the anticipated photo finish.

The Alan -Bawumia contest remains one of the most talked-about intra-party contest since the second coming of Nana Addo as the President of Ghana.

All polling station executives, coordinators, constituency executives, and regional executives, will join appointees and party elders to vote for the next Presidential Candidate of the ruling NPP in a yet-to-be-announced format.

The voting process can be decentralized across the region or staged in one region to decide who leads the party to the 2024 General Election.

*Team Bawumia floors Alan in his own backyard as race for NPP flagbearer takes shape*

The question of who leads the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 polls is gradually becoming clearer if the outcome of the recent Polling Station, Constituency and Regional contests is anything to go by.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia appears to be far ahead of his closest contender and Minister of Trade and Industry John Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten who symbolically was rejected by his own kinsmen.

The Ashanti Region which is traditionally the stronghold of the NPP, on Saturday May 28, 2022 saw the Bawumia team cruise over Alan as it won all the 10 Regional slots.

*Perceived aspirants of Mr. Alan Kyeremanten won nothing as their only hope for Chairman Asare Bediako failed to fly, securing only 20 votes. Another ardent and vociferous supporter of Alan who was eyeing the second Vice chairmanship position, Abraham Boadi popularly known as ‘Opooman’ secured only 11 out of the over 1000 votes*.

Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako known as Chairman Wontumi who was given a good run for his money, emerged victorious as he retained his seat for the third time with a wider margin

Other Bawumia loyalists including Patrick Acheampong and Victoria Owusu Achaw swept the 1st and 2nd Vice Chairmen respectively.

In other positions, Adom Appiah Kwame and Allen Gyimah won the Secretary and Assistant Secretary, Hajia Zainab Sallow won the treasurer, Nana Ama Ampomah won the women’s organiser while Francis Adomako won the organiser.

Raphael Sarfo Patrick won the Youth Organiser while Alhaji Salim Bamba sealed the Nasara Coordinator.

The overwhelming victory by Team Bawumia of 10 over 10 in the Ashanti Region, is an emphatic statement of the strength of DMB in the Ashanti Region, as the NPP gets ready to elect a new flagbearer next year to succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
