The Sunyani East District Office of the National Identification Authority (NIA), has revealed that a total of ten thousand and sixty-eight (10,968), registrants were captured by the Authority in the first quarter from January to March, 2022.
According to the Authority, out of the 10,068 registrants captured in the period under review, 3,517 were registered at their office while, the remaining 6,551 during their mass registrations held at the Sunyani Coronation Park.
Giving the break down of the registrations in an interview with Daily Searchlight’s Collins Fosu-Appiah, District Manager, Daniel Agyei Kyeremeh revealed that, his outfit managed to register 867 people in January, 1,146 in February and 1,010 in March.
Mr Agyei added that, they registered 696 people between November – December, 2021 after operationalization of the office on November 8, 2021.
He continued that, the office inherited 14,000 cards and has so far issued 12,378 leaving 4,797 which they are finding it difficult to locate the people and give them out.
“Logistically we are constrain that is the reason why we cannot go round the smaller towns and villages to give out the remaining 4,797 cards we inherited. I believe most of these people who registered during the mass registrations are still not aware their cards are here. We tried calling the numbers they used for registration but most of these numbers are off.”
The Manager observed that, apart from the challenge they have in terms of logistics, the office doesn’t have adequate staff to enable them register more people when there is much presure.
“You could see from the records that we attended to more people in February and March because we were having some contract staffs and now their contract has ended.”
He urged the general public to take advantage of SIM card registration extension and get registered now that there is less presure at the office rather than waiting for some few days to end the exercise before they rush to register. He also appealed to all those who registered during the mass registrations exercise in the Sunyani East Municipality and have not got their cards to come to the district office and collect them.
