The Member of Parliament (MP) for the good people of Sunyani East Constituency of the Bono Region, Hon. Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh together with his Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Constituency, Hon. Ansu Kumi broke ground for the construction of the first Fifa-standard astroturf pitch and ancillary facilities at Penkwasi “Sakora Park” in the Sunyani East Constituency which is expected to be completed within six months.
The project, according to the contractor, Wembley Sports Construction CO. LTD encapsulates a standard football pitch, 500 seater stand, a VIP seating area, a changing room and a flood lighting system.
He again stressed that before 2017, the entire country could only boast of 2 astroturfs belonging to individuals. However, the NPP government has so far constructed some 128 of the pitches across the country, a feat he indicated is a milestone for sports in Africa.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, the MP underscored the importance of the facility in the community describing same as timely and an avenue to augment and showcase football talents in the municipality.
Responding to the many calls made over the past few months for him to facilitate the construction of a project of that nature, he maintained, “It was worth waiting since the nature of the project as being advertised outshines many already constructed and of great standard.”
Reacting at the same gathering, the MCE expressed absolute gratitude to the MP for responding to the calls made by the Assembly on him to intervene with a project like that.
He stated that, a few more in other locations within the Municipality would reduce pressure on the facility and also help broaden the scope of talent discovered.
Nana Penkwasi Hene, Nana Kusi Boadum on behalf of the Paramount Chief for the Sunyani Traditional Council, Nana Bosoma Asor krawire, who was also the chairman for the occasion expressed their indebtedness to the MP, MCE and the government for bestowing such an important project upon the Municipality to help unearth football talents.
