Giovanni van Bronckhorst will take his Rangers side to Sevilla to battle Eintracht Frankfurt for Europa League glory on Wednesday.
The Gers haven’t tasted any form of European success since winning the now defunct Cup Winners’ Cup back in 1972, last reaching the final of the previously titled UEFA Cup in 2008 when they came undone against Zenit Saint Petersburg in Manchester.
They are just 90 minutes away from potentially finally getting their hands on this trophy, and here’s how Van Bronckhorst could set up to get there.
GK: Allan McGregor – McGregor missed the 2008 final through injury and is absolutely desperate to set the record straight.
RB: James Tavernier – The competition’s top scorer, Tavernier is an obvious starter. He has seven goals in 13 games and only Daichi Kamada (5) is any threat to his Golden Boot.
CB: Connor Goldson – This could be Goldson’s final game in a Rangers shirt as his contract expires in just a few weeks. So far, talks over an extension have been rough.
CB: Calvin Bassey – Bassey has been used both on the left and in the centre in recent weeks, with European games usually seeing him deployed alongside Goldson.
LB: Borna Barisic – Van Bronckhorst played Barisic as a wing-back in a 3-4-2-1 last time out against RB Leipzig but expect the boss to return to a four-man defence here.
CM: John Lundstram – Quickly proven to be a cult hero at Ibrox and was left out of the squad for this weekend’s domestic win over Hearts to preserve his fitness.
CM: Ryan Jack – Jack and Lundstram have formed an impressive partnership in midfield and expect that to continue here.
RM: Joe Aribo – Also left out against Hearts, Van Bronckhorst has been trying to shield Aribo from injury.
AM: Aaron Ramsey – The boss hinted on Tuesday that Ramsey’s experience in big games could see him start here.
LM: Ryan Kent – Kent’s performances in this competition have caught the eye of a number of teams around Europe ahead of what could be a big summer for the winger.
ST: Kemar Roofe – Roofe was back in training on Monday and is expected to be fit enough to feature in this one. If there’s a chance he can start, he surely will.
