POPULATION COUNCIL AND MARIE STOPES INTERNATIONAL COMMIT TO PARTNER NHIA TO STRENGTHEN PUBLIC EDUCATION ON FAMILY PLANNING

During separate courtesy calls to Dr. Da-costa Aboagye, the NHIA CEO, and his Executive Management team, representatives of the Population Council led by its Country Director, Dr. Dela Nai pledged to support the NHIA to deepen awareness of the Family Planning (FP) services that was recently included in the NHIS Benefit Package.
Speaking on behalf of Marie Stopes International (MSI), the Country Director, Mr. George Akanlu, also congratulated the CEO on the assumption of his new role and indicated MSI’s desire to assist the NHIA in engaging stakeholders to address challenges arising because of the implementation of the inclusion of FP services in the NHIS Scheme.
The Population Council together with MSI, the Ghana Health Service, and the NHIA piloted the inclusion of FP services that were later scaled up fully across the country from January 2022. Since its implementation, the partners have conducted a study on its Implementation to ascertain the impact of FP services since its inclusion in the NHIS Benefit Package.
The key findings from the research were discussed and ideas were championed to address gaps that had been identified that were inhibiting the accelerated uptake of the policy.
Population Council and MSI are both committed to providing financial and technical resources to increase awareness and strengthen the framework for the policy to thrive.
Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye on his part thanked both groups for a fruitful and progressive discussion and seized the occasion to outline his vision to address the key challenges affecting the Scheme. His overall objective is to eliminate illegal charges and make the Scheme more attractive by offering some preventive and promotive packages in the benefit package that may help identify disease conditions at an early stage.
