It has been reported that the Paramount Chief of Sefwi-Chirano Traditional Area, Okogyeman Kwaku Gyamprah III has expressed ‘gratitude’ to Management of Kinross, Chirano Gold Mines Limited, the company that owned the murderous cargo of explosives that killed nearly twenty Ghanaians last week.

In a press statement appealing for support, Okogyeman Kwaku Gyamprah III said that he was grateful to Chirano Mines, the company whose careless handling of dangerous cargo led to the deaths of his citizens.

The Daily Searchlight is especially unpleased by this posture from the Chief, who, by rights, should be mobilizing his citizens on a warpath to seek redress.

The statement from the chief was part of an appeal by the Sefwi-Chirano Traditional Council to philanthropists and well-wishers to support the government as a matter of urgency rebuild the devastated Appiatse community.

The Appiatse community was on Thursday, January 20, hit by a tragic explosion involving an explosive-laden truck and a motorcycle which claimed 14 lives and rendered many homeless.

In a press statement copied to the GNA, the Paramount Chief of Sefwi-Chirano Traditional Area, Okogyeman Kwaku Gyamprah III expressed deepest condolences to the victims and bereaved families of the tragic incident.

“As a Paramount Chief of Chirano Traditional Area who doubles as the Vice President of the Western North Regional House of Chiefs, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the families of the lost precious souls and also to those who are seeking medical care a speedy recovery”, the Omanhene said in the statement.

The Daily Searchlight is of the firm belief that this is not the time to be begging for alms. It is rather a time to be seeking justice for those so unjustly slaughtered by capitalism. If our chiefs cannot fight to avenge the unjustly killed, they should not worsen matters by pandering to people who have at least caused manslaughter.

We call on this Chief, and all those who would be like him, to hold their peace.
