The Ohum Kan Festival, celebrated annually by the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, is set to unfold under the esteemed leadership of Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV, the Akyem Tafohene. This festival is a vibrant showcase of the rich cultural heritage and unity of the Akyem people, spanning an entire week and bringing together community members in joyous celebration, reflection, and homage to their ancestors and traditions.
Tuesday, 16th July 2024
The festival will kick off with a nostalgic gathering “By the Fire Side,” setting a warm and reflective tone for the days ahead. Early in the morning, Nananom will visit several schools, bringing joy and wisdom to the students. The day will continue with a communal effort to clean sacred places, demonstrating respect for their cultural heritage. In the afternoon, the ban on drumming and noise making will be ceremoniously lifted, allowing the community to embrace the lively sounds that define their culture. The day will conclude with the “Tafo for CHRIST Concert,” a vibrant musical celebration organized by the Christian Council, bringing together voices in harmony and worship.

The second day will be dedicated to paying homage to Nananom, a tribute to the elders and ancestors. Schools across the region will participate in an Inter-schools Spelling Bee Quiz Competition, fostering a spirit of learning and friendly competition. Later, the “Ohum Talented Kids Show” will showcase the diverse talents of the younger generation, from singing and dancing to storytelling and more. The day will end with a “Health Walk, Float, and Street Carnival,” filling the streets with color, music, and an infectious energy.

Health and wellness will take center stage with comprehensive Health Screening services available to all community members. Sports enthusiasts can look forward to the SHS Soccer Competition, where high school teams will compete for glory. As the sun sets, the community will gather for a “Night of Music and Laughter,” an event filled with entertainment, laughter, and camaraderie.

A traditional “Palanquin Procession to Oracle” will mark the start of the day, blending spirituality and cultural heritage. This will be followed by the Fontomfrom Competition, where drumming groups will showcase their skills in a rhythmic battle. The evening will be dedicated to “Highlife Night,” a celebration of the beloved highlife music genre, with performances that will keep everyone dancing late into the night.

The penultimate day will feature a grand “Musical Concert/Hiplife Concert,” highlighting contemporary music and providing a platform for local artists to shine. The fusion of traditional and modern sounds will create an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
Sunday, 21st July 2024
The week of festivities will conclude with a solemn “Thanksgiving Service,” allowing the community to reflect and express gratitude for the blessings and joys shared throughout the week. This will be followed by a spirited Football Match, bringing together sports fans and families for a thrilling game. The celebrations will wrap up with a final “Musical Concert,” ensuring that the joyous spirit lingers on.
