The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced the elimination of processing fees for SSNIT contributors as part of its drive towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). The Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, made this announcement during an address to staff members from the Greater Accra Region and Claims Processing Centre-Accra.
Dr. Aboagye highlighted the Board’s approval of waiving fees for SSNIT contributors, aiming to streamline the integration of the SSNIT category to expand the Scheme’s reach. He outlined a four-point vision to enhance the Scheme’s attractiveness to all taxpayers, increase active membership, promote healthier lifestyles, and reduce the Scheme’s financial burden over time. Dr. Aboagye emphasized the need to move beyond solely covering curative services, deeming such an approach unsustainable for Ghana’s premier social intervention program.
In addition, Dr. Aboagye urged staff members to adopt healthy habits during work hours, not only for their well-being but also to serve as role models within their communities. He also announced plans to offer life insurance and supplementary medical coverage to motivate employees to continue their dedicated service towards advancing the Scheme’s objectives. Addressing staff concerns, he assured them of acquiring vehicles this year to bolster the Scheme’s fleet for easier registration of new members in remote areas. Furthermore, he pledged to fill vacant positions hindering operations in District offices and prioritize staff promotions and organizational optimization.
This engagement marked Dr. Aboagye’s first interaction with staff from the Greater Accra Region since assuming office months ago. He was joined by various high-ranking officials, including the Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Finance and Investment, Mr. Francis Owusu. Dr. Aboagye engaged Regional and District office staff, as well as drivers, during the event.
