Newcastle have agreed a deal worth €31m for breakout Reims star Hugo Ekitike, 90min understands.
The striker has been on the Magpies’ radar for some time, with 90min first revealing their interest in the 19-year-old during the January transfer window.
Ekitike enjoyed a breakthrough season in Ligue 1, scoring nine goals and adding three assists in 23 league appearances. Those performances drew the attention of some of Europe’s club’s, but it is Newcastle who are set to win the race for his signature.
90min understands the Tynesiders have agreed a fee of €31m (£26.4m) with Reims for the teenager, who is keen on a move to St. James’ Park.
The north east club have seen off some serious competition from the Bundesliga in the form of Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.
Ekitike is set to become Newcastle’s first signing under new sporting director Dan Ashworth, who was appointed on Monday.
