Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils suffered a 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park and they could drop into fifth by the time they host the Bees on Wednesday if Tottenham avoid defeat at Everton.

The Bees have ambitions of European qualification themselves but were held to an enthralling 3-3 draw by Brighton at the AMEX Stadium in their most recent outing.

Here’s what you need to know about the game.

Man Utd team news

Midfielder Casemiro remains suspended for this game and the following clash with Everton, leaving Erik ten Hag with another decision to make in the centre of the park. With Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek also sidelined, the spots will go to two of Scott McTominay, Marcel Sabitzer and Fred.

Anthony Martial made his return from injury as a substitute in the defeat to Newcastle but probably has a few more yards to put in before he makes the starting XI.

Man Utd predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Shaw; Fred, Sabitzer; Antony, Fernandes, Rashford; Weghorst.

Brentford team news

Brentford switched to a three-player defence in their 3-3 draw with Brighton on Saturday and Thomas Frank may be tempted to deploy the same formation here. It was in effect when the Bees stung Man Utd 4-0 earlier this season.

Vitaly Janelt could come into central midfield for Mikkel Damsgaard if fit but otherwise it could be a similar side to the one at the weekend.

Brentford predicted lineup (3-5-2): Raya; Jansson, Pinnock, Mee; Hickey, Janelt, Norgaard, Jensen, Henry; Mbeumo, Toney.

Some dodgy results just prior to and after the international break have made Man Utd look a little less certain of a top four place and a clash with the free-flowing Brentford is not an ideal one after that defeat to Newcastle.

However, the 4-0 defeat to Brentford earlier in the season acted as a firm wake-up call to Ten Hag and his players and this is an excellent opportunity to both drag themselves back onto the horse and exact revenge for that embarrassing defeat.

United haven’t scored a goal in any of their last three Premier League games – that lack of goal threat obviously must be solved if they are to beat Brenford, but they remain favourites to do so.

Prediction: Man Utd 2-1 Brentford
