The Minister for Fisheries and Aqua Culture, Hon. Mavis Hawah Koomson has taken a swipe at the
former president, John Dramani Mahama. The minister was replying to a newspaper report that seeks to

suggest that he would do away with the closed season being used on the fisher folks. According to the former president, if he won the 2024 elections, he would completely stop the closed-season policy.
The minister indicated that this statement emanating from the ex-president suggests that he believes that
Ghanaians easily forget events.

" We want to remind him about how Ghana’s fish was banned from the European market as a result of the
ill practices and illegal fishing under his watch in 2013. Ghana regained our position in 2017 when Nana
Addo came to power and worked hard to restore our image and status. So Mahama must stop the ugly

noise and spare us his bad rule," she stated.
Madam Koomson made this statement when she took her turn at the conference room of the Information
Ministry to announce the closed season for 2023 to enable the fish stock to triple up in that period.
She posited that the current administration has a lot more for the fisher folks than Mr. Mahama.

“As l speak the Elmina Fishing Harbour had been outdoors and the harbor at James Town's is bound to
be operational in few months’ time. We have supplied outboard motors, canoes, nets, smokers, and other
gear at subsidized prices for the fisher folks. On top of that, our regime has stamped it's authority on
illegal fishing in our territorial waters. Some foreign vessels have been banned and everything is on
course. These Mr. Mahama failed to do, so he must stop the unnecessary noise and keep quiet to see

things happen."
