She said though the Assembly continued to prioritise sanitation, residents also had the responsibility to promote environmental cleanliness by taking the first step to ensuring that their immediate surroundings were tidied.

The MCE, addressing the launch ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ campaign in the Municipality, said the Assembly would be ruthless in applying the laws on offenders, saying,”no form of excuses will be tolerated.”

The campaign launch saw various Heads of Departments, staff from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Environmental Health Unit and staff of the Assembly, educating the public on the need to promote environmental cleanliness.

They engaged traders at Madina Zongo, Ritz Junction, Oyarifa, West Adenta, North Legon, Atomic Junction, Madina Estate, Atomic junction, North Legon, University of Professional Studies, Accra among others.

The initiative, being championed by Mr Henry Quartey, Greater Accra Regional Minister, forms part of the President’s vision of making the City of Accra the cleanest in Africa.

The launch marked the start of the implementation and enforcement of the ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ by-laws to mandate households, businesses, and individuals to clean their frontages, surroundings, and immediate environments.

The MCE stressed that the vision of the President to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa was alive and that sanitation by-laws would be strictly enforced.

She, therefore, called on residents to be responsible in safeguarding the environment by ensuring that it was always kept clean.

She said getting punished for poor sanitation was needless and avoidable urging the residents to prioritise environmental cleanliness.

Mrs Adjabeng said: “Imagine getting imprisoned together with a rapist or an armed robber for failing to clean your surroundings, it is very absurd, so let’s all ensure that we take this initiative very serious, dump refuse at only designated places, inform the Assembly whenever you want to clean the gutters so that we can make provisions for the collection.”

“If your house does not own a dustbin, visit the zonal council to register and acquire one,” she added.

The Ghana News Agency observed that residents in the Municipality embraced the initiative to keep Accra clean.

Some residents were seen cleaning their frontages.

The La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) is among 29 Assemblies in the Region that have passed and gazetted by-laws for the lawful implementation of the initiative.
