The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu, and the Chief Director, Dr. Afisah Zakariah have participated in the UNFPA Global Equity 2030 Alliance, of which Ghana was a Co-Champion, as well as the 2023 World Health Summit.
The Conference, which ran from October 15th to 17th, 2023, in Berlin, was dedicated to advancing gender equity in science, technology, and financing globally by the year 2030.
The primary goal of this alliance was to normalize gender equity in science and technology by employing data-driven arguments and strategies.
These efforts were aimed at creating a sustainable and inclusive future where the voices of women were heard, and their potential was fully realized.
The Minister was a panelist in a discussion focused on the “Evidence-Based Approach to Advance Gender Equitable and Women-Centric Solutions.”
During her participation, she emphasized Ghana’s commitment to promoting STEM education, as evidenced by the initiation of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program launched in 2021.
She also discussed the “Girls in ICT” initiative, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5, which aimed to achieve gender equality and empower women and girls through information and communication technology.
Minister Abudu further highlighted Ghana’s role in championing the drafting and passage of the Affirmative Action Bill, intended to increase women’s participation in decision-making processes.
“In the pursuit of a more equitable future for all, Ghana actively promoted education at the secondary school level, including STEM subjects, through the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy,” she said.
The Equity 2030 Alliance’s vision encompassed closing gender gaps in health, science, and technology, while also ensuring the adequate funding of women-centric solutions and research.
As Ghana continued to play a significant role in the Equity 2030 Alliance, it underscored the nation’s dedication to gender equity and the empowerment of women and girls in science, technology, and education.
