Ortiz replaces Victor Manuel Vucetich, who departed on May 28 after Rayados fell 2-1 on aggregate to Tigres in the semifinals. Vucetich previously led the team from 2009 to 2013, inspiring two Liga MX trophies, two Copa Mexico titles and the 2021 Concacaf Champions League trophy.

“We inform our fans and the media that the club has made the decision to end Victor Manuel Vucetich’s tenure as the head coach of the Rayados first team. We acknowledge and greatly value the historic legacy that Victor has left us, in terms of titles won, international recognition and records set during his time at the club,” read the statement from Rayados.

The former Club America manager will now take over in an attempt to bring back the spark to the once reigning side. He’s no stranger to the league, leading las Aguilas for a year after featuring as a player in Club America, Necaxa, Tigres and Santos Laguna.

The new coach will have time to settle in, as the team enters the offseason before the Liga MX Apertura kicks off on June 30. The Apertura will also take break as Liga MX participates in the first comprehensive edition of Leagues Cup, a newly designed tournament with MLS.
