Lage was relieved of his duties at the weekend in the wake of the club’s 2-0 loss to West Ham, which saw them drop into the relegation zone with just one win to their name so far this season.

Through Wolves’ relationship with agent Jorge Mendes, a number of Portuguese coaches have been linked including Pedro Martins and current Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim.

Lille’s Paulo Fonseca, who previously interviewed for the Newcastle job, and Spanish former Liverpool and Everton boss Rafa Benitez are both believed to have shown an interest in the role.

But 90min understands that Di Francesco is being seriously considered by Wolves

The former Italy international has a hugely impressive CV, having been the man who took Sassuolo into Serie A and then into Europe, before taking charge of former club Roma. He subsequently guided the Giallorossi to third place in Serie A and to the Champions League semi-finals.

Di Francesco is currently a free agent, having had spells with Sampdoria, Cagliari and Hellas Verona, and 90min understands that talks have taken place, with the 53-year-old coach understood to be hugely keen on trying his hand in England.

It is also understood that manager-less Bournemouth have shown an interest in Di Francesco, as they did with his close friend Roberto De Zerbi, who recently took the Brighton job instead.
