The Founder of the Diaspora Progressive Movement (DPM), an NGO in the United States of America (USA), Dr. Lawrence Appiah, has admonished eligible voters in the Assin North constituency not to sell their conscience for money and other materials.
According to him, a lot of people were seen on camera receiving money and items from politicians before, during, and after elections at Kumawu and other areas, which obviously influenced their voting patterns.
He lamented how eligible voters including university students, workers in public and private institutions, and opinion leaders succumbed to the activities of vote buyers saying “T-shirts, cups of rice, and GH 20 were given in some instances”.
Dr Appiah stated these on Tuesday in an interview with Journalists on the state of mind of the Ghanaian voter at Goaso, the Ahafo regional capital.
The Founder noted that influencing voters with money and materials started way back in basic, secondary and tertiary educational institutions, which has since affected the mindset of products of these schools.
He said people must be allowed to vote freely without any form of enticement for their preferred candidates based on competencies, commitment, hard work, loyalty and other unique traits.
Dr Appiah stressed that voters in the country must solely exercise their franchise based on good economic policies, infrastructural development, job creation and effective social intervention initiatives.
The Founder entreated eligible voters to choose leaders wisely and responsibly in order to attract good roads, quality education, health, youth and women empowerment, water, sanitation, peace, and security in the country.
“Selling your votes to political leaders means sacrificing the development and well-being of current and future generations. Posterity will forever blame you for your shameful action” he indicated
Dr Appiah urged residents of Assin North Constituency to vote in the upcoming bye-election devoid of money or material influence noting “Together we can make our democracy beautiful, great and strong”.
