Diogo Dalot has revealed he is happy with Manchester United’s progression this pre-season, though admitted it was disappointing to throw away a two-goal lead against Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Red Devils led 2-0 in Perth and were playing some wonderful football despite playing in torrential rain, with the friendly nearly postponed because of the conditions and state of the pitch.

Jadon Sancho’s volley and an own goal from Matty Cash looked to have buried Aston Villa, but goals from Leon Bailey and later Calum Chambers in stoppage time saw Man Utd pegged back.

Erik ten Hag was highly critical of his players for not killing the game, but Dalot was at least happy with Man Utd’s ever-improving work on the ball, particularly in such tough weather conditions.

“[It was] difficult. I mean I think you all can see, difficult conditions, the pitch was not very good to play football,” Dalot told Man Utd’s channels.

“I think we [played] a good first half. We scored two beautiful goals, the way we want to play.

“The second half a little bit difficult. I think we could [have] come into the second half a bit more lively. We concede some counter-attacks that we shouldn’t, and obviously the pitch was getting more and more difficult, so the game was a little bit more ugly.

“But, in the end, we should be happy for what we did on this tour.”
