The Socceroos were drawn into Group D where they will begin their competition on November 22 against defending champions France. Following that, they will take Tunisia four days later before finishing their group stage against Denmark on November 30.

Degenek played in 28 games for the Crew during the 2022 MLS season after arriving last January as a free agent having previously playing for Serbian side Red Star Belgrade.

Born in Croatia, he moved to Australia in 2000 and he made his debut for the national team in 2016. He has since played 38 matches for the Socceroos, scoring one goal, and he is now set to play in his second FIFA World Cup.

Degenek was an unused substitute when Australia qualified for Qatar by winning an inter-confederation playoff over Peru on penalties. He will be hoping for a bigger role in what will be Australia’s fifth straight World Cup, with their best previous performance coming in Germany 2006 when they qualified for the Round of 16.
