Among the changes being made is that of the defender and former USMNT international Jonathan Bornstein, who is out of contract and now eligible for free agency. Defender Boris Sekulic stands eligible for free agency as well, while defender Andre Reynolds II had his contract option denied.

Sekulić and Reynolds will be available for selection in the 2022 MLS Re-Entry Draft.

“As a technical staff we felt that these moves were necessary as we continue to prepare for the 2023 season,” sporting director Georg Heitz said in a club statement. “We’d like to thank Andre [Reynolds II], Boris [Sekulic] and Jonny for their years of service to the club and wish them all the best for the future.”

The team will need to revamp their roster if they wish to compete seriously during the 2023 season. They still have one Designated Player spot available, after agreeing to a new deal with midfielder Gaston Gimenez that saw him off that roster classification.

Chicago Fire concluded the recent campaign in 12th place on the Eastern Conference table, with just 39 points in 34 games and a record of 10W-15L-9D.
