The Bono Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has revealed that a total of 150 fire cases were recorded out of the 164 incidents in the 1st quarter of 2022, from January to March.
According to the Command, this year 2022, saw an increase of 60 cases compare to 1st quarter of 2021 which recorded 104.
The report indicated that out of 164 cases, 75 were Bush fires, 50 Domestic fires, 10 Vehicular fires, 4 Electrical fires, 5 Institutional fires, 3 Industrial fires, 2 Commercial fires, 5 Rescues and 9 Road Traffic Accidents (RTA).
Speaking to Daily Searchlight’s Collins Fosu-Appiah on the ‘International Firefighters Day’, Bono Regional Public Relations Officer, DOIII Ruth Mensah-Tandoh observed that out of the 104 cases recorded same period last year, 34 were Domestic fires, Bush fires 21, 9 Vehicular, 6 Electrical, 1 Institutional, 5 Industrial, 10 Commercial, 7 Rescues and 6 Road Traffic Accidents.Â
She continued that, one live was lost while twenty-three injuries were recorded from 164 cases in 2022, 1st quarter. She attributed the rise of cases to noncompliance of fire safety protocols by farmers and abuse of road traffic regulations on our roads.Â
Mrs Mensah-Tandoh called on the general public especially those in the Bono region to observe fire safety protocols outlined by GNFS and call their emergency numbers on time when any incident that requires their presence happen been it fire, flooding or accident to help protect lives and properties.
“International Firefighters Day” is celebrated on the 4th of May every year to remember firefighter heros who died in the line of duty and to pray for them. It all started in Australia in 1999 when 5 firefighters died in a wildfire. Since then, the Day has been celebrated worldwide to remember all firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
