Obuasi (Ash), May 30, GNA – AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, has organised a two-day training in basic financial management for 60 women drawn from its operational areas as part of efforts to expose them to financial literacy.
A total of 400 women were being targeted to receive training under the programme this year, and the goal was to boost the financial performance of tbusinesses of the beneficiaries and enhance entrepreneurship in Obuasi.
It also sought to empower the beneficiaries to take the right financial decisions in running their businesses.
Mrs Mavis Nana Yaa Kyei, the Social Development and Gender Superintendent of AngloGold Ashanti, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the training, said the company believed in women empowerment and the event would provide them with equal opportunities to thrive in their endeavours.
She said strengthening the competencies of women in all sectors of the economy were critical to ensure inclusive development.
“Once you want to empower women, you just don’t have to empower them socially but economically to enable them make definitive decisions about their finances to ensure sustainable business growth,” she emphasised.
Mrs Kyei explained that the programme would run on a monthly basis and would capture areas such as financial planning and financial decision making for micro and small businesses, manual book-keeping, calculation skills, and building a positive banking habit.
Madam Vivian Elsie Obeng, one the participants lauded AngloGold Ashanti for the programme, saying that it was an eye-opener that would enable her depart from the old ways of doing business without keeping proper records.
“It has always been my aim as a distributor of bottled water to work with big institutions like AGA. With the knowledge gained in bookkeeping and how to invest for the future, I will be well placed to work with them hopefully,” she said with a big smile.
Madam Cynthia Mba, a physically challenged participant said the training was insightful and urged women in Obuasi and its environs to take advantage of the programme to boost their knowledge of managing the inflows and outflows of their businesses effectively.
