Deputy Minister for Energy and MP for Mpohor, Hon. John Sanie, has reiterated the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led government’s commitment, via the Ministries of Energy, Transport and Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, together with their respective relevant sector agencies, to pursuing the vision of creating the right environment and ensuring the necessary infrastructure to ensure the viability of e-mobility, making Ghana suitable for the introduction of Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs).
He made this statement when he represented the Energy Minister, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Guest of Honor at the Energy Quest Foundation EV Revolution Africa Mobility Conference held at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel.
The two-day conference dubbed “The New ERA: Innovation and Sustainability” brought together government agencies, business Leaders, and other key stakeholders in the energy, transportation and environmental industries to discuss the advancements in the industry, cum the policies and approaches to reducing the emission of GreenHouse Gases (GHG).
In his address, the Deputy Minister mentioned that transitioning to net-zero emissions by 2050 was the new target for climate and global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions policy, following the 2015 Paris Agreement, to limit the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and also to pursue measures to avoid breaching 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
“It is thus imperative for vulnerable, low-and medium-income countries such as Ghana, as well as all key stakeholders in the energy space, against the urgent backdrop of extreme heatwaves, droughts, fires and floods across the globe, to work on solutions in driving innovative, cutting-edge solutions innovations in electric vehicles, sustainable transportation and renewable energy solutions towards energy transition, and also in making e-mobility a reality, as it will aid them in making commitments to reach net-zero emissions within their jurisdictions”, he said.
He further disclosed that the 2023 budget setting out a waiver of import duties on Electric Vehicles (EVs) designated for public transportation for 8 years, is also a significant step by government in the pursuit of this goal, as is the waiver for semi-knocked down and completely knocked down Electric Vehicles brought into the country by registered EV assembly companies for the same 8-year period.
The conference also afforded businesses the opportunity to showcase their products and innovative technologies at the exhibition, as well as to network and connect with industry players from all around the world.
