A storm is hovering over the Ghana Audit Service, following the extension of the appointment of the current Auditor-General, by a further two years by President Akufo-Addo.

The corridors and offices of Ghana’s statutory audit body is awash with discontent, over what many believe is an unfair and unlawful extension of the Auditor-General’s mandate.

Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu was due for statutory retirement from Service on 1st August, 2024, but has had his term extended by a further two years.

The term in office of Akuamoah Asiedu’s predecessor, Daniel Domelevu, was unceremoniously terminated by President Akufo-Addo, first in 202, and secondly in March 2021, in a messy process that ignited a storm that eventually ended in the Supreme Court, where the presidential decision was declared as unlawful.

Domelevu, however, was never to be reinstated in office, paving the way for Akuamoah Asiedu to take over.

Some senior audit service persons suggested to the Daily Searchlight yesterday that if anything, Mr. Akuamoah Asiedu should have been reduced by a rank in the case of extension in office, instead of being maintained in office after August.

His predecessor Domelevu is believed to have been pushed out of office to pave way for a more ‘docile’ person at the helm of the Audit Service, where financially sensitive audits are conducted into government and public spending.
