A patient allegedly abandoned in a bush by the Winneba Government Hospital has tragically died. The incident occurred at Gomoa Ojobi, where the patient was reportedly left without any medical assistance or support.

In a report by Accra based UTV, the deceased, an elderly woman, was part of patients that were taken to the Winneba Government Hospital from a vehicular accident on the Gomoa Ojobi road.

The reporter said the patient was in a critical condition and with no claim for her by family members.

According to Dr. George Prah, the Medical Superintendent at the Winneba Government Hospital, the patient was brought to the hospital about two months ago. However, no one came to the clinic as a relative to cater for her and she suffered some injuries to her head.

Dr. Prah said the patient’s injury to the head made her scream at night. This led to the Hospital’s authorities to eject her and go abandon her in a bush on the Gomoa Ojobi road.

The circumstances leading to her death are currently unclear and have sparked outrage among the local community and Ghanaians online.

The Daily Searchlight is deeply ashamed by this development. We believe that this incident has exposed a side of Ghanaians that is wholly unpalatable, and undermines our self-seeking claims that we are a religious and cultured people.

Ghana is a nation with one of the highest numbers of churches per capita on the face of the planet. In terms of density, we have even more pastors and preachers than churches. We also have a very high number of mosques with their Imams.

Ghana is also a nation that is blessed with thousands, if not tens of thousands of chiefs, who often claim that Ghana is a ‘cultured’ nation which would not accept certain practices.

We also have our politicians, who claim that they mean well for the people.

Then we have our hospitals, medical doctors, and nurses, who often maltreat patients.

Then we have the soulless and shocking act of the Winneba Government Hospital to have the guts to dump an injured patient, an old woman, no less, in the bush to die.

We call on the government and the affected ministry to conduct the most urgent investigation into this matter to find out exactly what went wrong, so that we may not experience such a heart-rending incident again. Meanwhile the Medical Superintendent of the Winneba Government Hospital should be suspended from duty until full and final investigation is completed.
