The campaign team of former President Mahama has stated that they do not have a solution to Ghana’s rapidly depreciating currency, the Ghana Cedi, as yet.
Rather, if given power, they intend to hold a ‘national economic dialogue’ to find a solution to the phenomenon.
Apparently, the team also lacks ready-made solutions to the nation’s myriad economic problems. Once again, they will find the solutions after the same ‘national economic dialogue’.

“’Our number one priority will be stabilizing the economy and restoring a stable currency. We will launch an urgent economic recovery and fiscal consolidation plan following a national economic dialogue to be held within one hundred days of assumption of office.'”
This was contained in a statement issued by the Special aide and spokesperson for the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, in reaction to media reports claiming that the former President promised to stabilise the “struggling” Ghanaian cedi within a hundred days of taking office.
According to Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Mr Mahama did not promise to stabilise the Cedi within 100 days. Instead, he outlined a comprehensive plan to address the challenges, demonstrating his understanding of the situation.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 29, in response to the news publication, Mogtari clarified; “To quote him, Mahama stated, ‘Our number one priority will be stabilizing the economy and restoring a stable currency. We will launch an urgent economic recovery and fiscal consolidation plan following a national economic dialogue to be held within one hundred days of assumption of office.'”
She noted that the NDC flagbearer emphasised the need for fiscal discipline and responsible economic management to achieve currency stability and highlighted measures such as reducing government expenditures, preventing waste and corruption, and boosting revenues by expanding the tax net.
“Additionally, he mentioned simplifying the VAT and streamlining its collection, abolishing the e-levy, and reducing some burdensome taxes on businesses and households,” she added.
“The Mahama 2024 Campaign reiterates its unwavering commitment to transparent and responsible communication with the Ghanaian people. We urge the media to accurately represent the candidate’s statements in their reporting, ensuring the public is well-informed.”
