The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) and its development partners have commenced the 16-day campaign against gender-based violence with a walk through Tamale’s principal streets on 25th November, 2023.
This initiative, held under the theme ‘ *UNITE! Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls,’* coincided with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25.
The aim was to raise public awareness and prevent this crime, predominantly targeting women.
The 16 Days of Activism is a global effort to continuously raise awareness and mobilize support to end such atrocities.
Following the walk, Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu, the Sector Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, emphasized the pressing concern of violence against women and girls worldwide, stressing the necessity to invest in prevention measures.
The Minister urged families, individuals, communities, and corporate organizations to take intentional actions, including gender-sensitive policy formulation, empowerment opportunities, and transformative actions, to prevent such violence.
The Minister disclosed that the Ministry has completed the initial review phase of the Domestic Violence Act, 732 (2007), its Legislative Instrument, and the National Domestic Violence Policy for redrafting.
Additionally, in partnership with UNFPA, the Ministry has trained over 120 market executives as paralegals to aid survivors within markets and communities.
Expressing gratitude, the Minister thanked all partners for their technical and financial support towards the Ministry’s programmes.
Mr. Shani Alhassan Shaibu, the Northern Regional Minister, called for a unified effort to combat injustices against all genders, especially women and girls.
Dr. Wilfred Ochan, the UNFPA Ghana Representative, reiterated the imperative of breaking the silence on gender-based violence against young girls to enable them to reach their full potential.
Representatives of development partners reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the country in ending all forms of gender-based violence.
The walk concluded with a media launch at the Tamale Jubilee Park.
