The first Merseyside derby of the 2023/24 takes place on Saturday lunchtime when Liverpool welcome struggling Everton to Anfield.

The Reds’ Premier League progress has been stunted by the controversial defeat at Tottenham and a 2-2 draw with Brighton, though Jurgen Klopp’s side still sit fourth and only three points off Spurs and Arsenal at the summit.

Two wins from their last three games have boosted Everton’s standing after a dismal start to the campaign, but the Toffees’ recent record against their local rivals is poor, winning only one of the last 28 meetings.

Here’s 90min‘s preview for Saturday’s early kick-off.

Andrew Robertson

Liverpool will be without first choice left-back Andy Robertson after he suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder while on international duty with Scotland. Kostas Tsimikas should now get an extended run in the team in his absence.

Curtis Jones remains suspended for his red card at Tottenham but Diogo Jota is available again to replenish Klopp’s options in attack.

Cody Gakpo, Thiago, Caoimhin Kelleher and Stefan Bajcetic will all miss out with injuries.

Liverpool predicted lineup vs Everton (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Tsimikas; Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Salah, Jota, Diaz.

Abdoulaye Doucoure

Toffees boss Sean Dyche may see little reason to tinker with his starting XI after their most convincing performance of the season last time out, easing to a 3-0 victory over winless Bournemouth.

James Garner, Jack Harrison and Abdoulaye Doucoure all scored and should retain their spots in the starting XI, with 38-year-old Ashley Young likely to continue at right-back with Seamus Coleman sidelined. Dele Alli and Andre Gomes remain unavailable.

Everton predicted lineup vs Liverpool (4-4-1-1): Pickford; Young, Branthwaite, Tarkowski, Mykolenko; McNeil, Garner, Onana, Harrison; Doucoure, Calvert-Lewin.

Liverpool and Klopp may not be happy with another early kick-off following an international break but it will provide the perfect opportunity to send a message to the rest of the Premier League after a few disappointing results.

The Reds gave away a couple of cheap goals at Brighton earlier in October but shouldn’t be pressured into such mistakes by Everton, who will sit off the home side and look for ideal opportunities to counter.

Everton may capitalise on the chaos of derby day to get on the scoresheet, but their lack of quality in defence will likely help Liverpool to a convincing win on Saturday.

Score prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Everton
