Gavi’s strike in the 49th minute was enough for La Roja to down Erling Haaland and co, ensuring Luis de la Fuente’s squad and the Tartan Army cannot be caught in the top two places in Group A.

Spain now sit top of the group ahead of Scotland on goal difference. Both sides have two games left to play but Norway have now competed in seven qualifiers and will partake in only one in the November international break.

Scotland weren’t in action on Sunday, having been defeated by Spain in Seville on Thursday night, and next play when they visit France on Tuesday night in a friendly.

An incredible and unexpected run of form from Steve Clarke’s side saw them charge into a dominant position in Group A. Five wins in a row against Cyprus, Spain, Norway, Georgia and Cyprus again gave them a major chance of securing a Euro 2024 spot with three games remaining.

Scotland have now booked their spot ahead of their last two games against Georgia and Norway.

Elsewhere, Wales gave their own hopes of another tournament appearance a big shot in the arm with a triumphant 2-1 victory over Croatia. Rob Page’s side moved up to second in Group D thanks to two strikes from Harry Wilson, overtaking Zlatko Dalic’s team. Wales will confirm their qualification for Euro 2024 automatically if they beat Armenia and Turkey next month.
