The former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party Mohammed Murtala Ibrahim has stated that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s victory at the super delegates’ conference is a reaffirmed of the fact that he is the preferred choice of the party.
He has stated that this outcome did not come as a surprise to many observers.
“Political watchers have indicated that DMB has over the years endeared himself to the supporters of the NPP since he joined mainstream politics. His growth within the party has been phenomenal from a true and true economist with little skills in political communication and campaigning to an exceptional political communicator cum campaigner,” Mr. Ibrahim stated.
Mohammed Murtala Ibrahim was speaking in an interview with the Daily Searchlight.
He stated that DMB has made public his ideas on how the country can be developed leveraging technology.
“He has publicly outlined various ideas and policies. The party is in no doubt about his ability to govern effectively. He has shown his leadership abilities even as vice president by the various policies he has championed in this regime. It is no doubt that he will govern excellently when clothed with executive authority. It is therefore understandable that the super delegates of the party gave him an overwhelming endorsement. Interestingly, while DMB has been very clear in his message to the party delegates on what his ideas are moving the country to the next pedestal, some of his opponents have not done same and even in cases where an attempt has been made to give an insight into what their thinking is, its either rhetoric or the singing of patriotic songs is put out there as a policy.
“Additionally, DMB has shown loyalty and respect to the party delegates. He is the only candidate that visited all the delegates in their home regions and in most cases their various constituencies. He personally called and spoke to almost every single MP. There are testimonies of various important persons in the party who have said, not only did the Vice president call them, but he came to their homes to inform them of his mission and also to seek for their support. This is a person who is not just showing them respect by connecting with people within the party structures. He seeks to lead a party and as an effective leader he has connected with the structures. It is therefore not surprising that the DMB is very strong in all the corners from the country. From Aflao to Zabzugu, from Bawku to Yapei from Cape Coast to Wa the signal is strong and more and more people are connecting.
“Moreover, this contest is one to select a leader for the party for the 2024 elections and beyond. We therefore need a person with the right temperament to lead a mass organization like the new patriotic party. We also need someone who is fiercely loyal to the party whether in government or in opposition. We also need someone that will not threaten fire and brimstone of things does not go his or her way. Someone who will not blackmail the party and threaten to destroy the party if things do not go his/her way. We need a leader who will appreciate what the party has done for them and continue to work for the greater good of the party. Someone who is willing to make sacrifices for the party without holding the party to ransom anytime he/she wants something form the party. We need a leader that has tact and brings everyone on board regardless of religion, ethnicity or any other trait. DMB is without a doubt a candidate that we can find all the desired qualities in. A devout Muslim who has shown time without number that religion should not be a dividing factor amongst us. This he done admirably with testimonies from various religious leaders from all religious groups praising him for fostering religious unity in the country.
“More so, DMB has been active in mainstream politics since his nomination as a running mate in 2008, yet no one has been able to make an allegation of corruption against him from his time at Bank of Ghana through his time as a Vice president. He is an incorruptible politician which is a very important trait for a leader of any political organization particularly seeking to lead a country. He has been insulted and vilified in various ways but he has never responded with insults.
“Interestingly, despite having had an overwhelming endorsement from the special delegates, he is the only candidate amongst the 4 taking part in the November election who has in the road campaigning at the moment. He has completed his campaign in the Oti region and has moved unto the Volta region. Clearly, he is not showing any signs of complacency as he has not reduced the tempo of the campaign prior to the special delegates conference. He is putting in the hard work and yet when he gets an overwhelming endorsement, some people want us to believe he is getting the votes because the establishment is whipping people in line. This party does reward hard work and loyalty and the vice president has not only shown hard work and loyalty to the course of the party, he has shown fidelity. Arguably, there no one amongst the candidates who has toured the length and breast of this country campaigning for the party like the vice president has done.
“In conclusion, given the forgoing, DMB will be elected by the Party in November as its flagbearer and it will not be because he is an establishment candidate, it will not be because he is from the geographic north of the country, it will be because he is competent, has served the party faithfully and diligently and has shown the party loyalty, hard work, devotion and respect and connected with the grassroots of the party and they in turn have rewarded him. God bless Ghana, God bless the NPP and God bless DMB,” he concluded.
