The Member of Parliament for IN Obuasi West, Hon. Kwaku Kwarteng, has filed an official complaint against Onua
TV in Accra to complain about broadcasting a death wish pronounced on him by Ms. Mariama Seidu, the NDC
Women’s Organiser for the CMB Shed Branch in the Obuasi West Constituency.
According to the MP, on Thursday, 8th June 2023, Onua TV organized a live outdoor activity they called, the
People’s Assembly in Obuasi.
He stated that in the course of the live programme, an Onua TV journalist, Ms Yaa Titi offered the programme’s
platform to Ms Mariama Seidu who pronounced her death wish on him and prayed that for him to die so that there
may be a by-election for the constituency.
“Ms Yaa Titi never made any effort to draw Ms. Mariama Seidu’s or viewers’ attention to the inappropriateness of
the death wish nor did she do anything to dissociate Onua TV from it.
“Indeed, Onua TV subsequently published the said death wish on their social media platform(s) leading to the viral
propagation of this unfortunate pronouncement throughout the country and far beyond the borders of Ghana,” Mr.
Kwarteng stated.
He attached the relevant video clip, adding, “It is my respectful view that the public pronouncement and public
prayer by political party executives for the death of their political opponents is dangerous and unhealthy for our
democracy and the cohesion of Ghana as a society.
“The media should not encourage and should not provide their platform for propagating such unhealthy and
dangerous pronouncements. I consider that Onua TV was unethical, and unprofessional and breached the ethics of
journalism in this instance. I am therefore by this complaint, bringing the action and inaction of Onua TV in respect
of this matter to the attention of the Media Commission for your investigation and consequential remedial action.
Thank you,” the complaint concluded.
