The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey is participating in the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in Doha, Qatar from 5th to 9th March 2023.
Speaking during the General Debate, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey expressed concern about the exposure of many Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to extreme climate vulnerabilities as well as the looming global debt crisis. She called for multilateral efforts to tackle these challenges and pledged Ghana’s firm commitment to global efforts in this regard as well as efforts to turn around the fortunes of the country.
The objective of the Conference is to help build an ambitious new programme for action for the Least Developed Countries. The implementation period for the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for the Least Developed Countries has been completed and the Doha Programme of Action was adopted in New York on 17th March 2022.
The second part of LDC5, will thus undertake a comprehensive look at the best means of implementing the IPoA, mobilise additional international support measures and action in favour of LDCs and agree on a renewed partnership between LDCs and their development partners to overcome structural challenges, eradicate poverty, to chart ways for countries to achieve internationally agreed development goals and enable graduation from the LDC category.
