The Ghana Federation of Disability Organization (GFD) is calling on the government to give work quota in public sector employment to Persons With Disabilities (PWD) by way of automatic absorption of members who complete tertiary and other educational levels and also exclude PWDs from freezing of public sector employment as announced by the government in the 2023 budget.
According to the Association, this will not only improve their livelihood but also serve as motivation for parents to enroll their wards in school so that more persons with disabilities will take pride in education, and take active part in decision making and development of the country.
In a release signed by the National President of Ghana Society for the Physically Disabled (GSPD), Mr Mathew Annor Kodom to mark this year’s International Day of Persons With Disabilities, indicated that our country is confronting a cascade of crises that are disproportionally impacting persons with disabilities and for that matter we need transformative solutions to rescue the Sustainable Development Goals and leave no one behind, and it’s requires greater public-private sector collaboration to develop strategies for, with and by persons with disabilities.
International Day of Persons With Disabilities is celebrated across the globe on ‘3RD DECEMBER,’ every year. It was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic, and cultural life.
The theme for this year’s celebration; is “TRANSFORMATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR INCLUSIVE- DEVELOPMENT; THE ROLE OF INNOVATION IN FUELING AN ACCESSIBLE AND EQUITABLE WORLD”.
The statement revealed that this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities shines a light on the role of innovation in fueling an accessible and equitable Ghana.
Mr. Kodom outlined some measures the association wants the government and parliament put in place to ensure an inclusive and equitable society for all persons in the country.
“On this day and every day, let us work together in finding innovative solutions to build an accessible and equitable Ghana for all, and I, therefore, call on the government of H. E NANA ADDO DANQUAH AKUFFO ADDO and the parliament to ensure the following:”
1. Increase District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) for persons with disabilities to 5%
2. Free tertiary education or enhanced scholarship packages for us.
3. Work quota in the Public sector and should not include us in freezing of employment
4. Easy access to all public buildings and make sure all contractors in the country stick to the new building code and accessibility standards.
5. The amended version of the persons with disabilities Act 715 must be accepted and approved by Parliament and make it bite by bringing the LEGISLATIVE INSTRUMENT(LI)
6. Introduce awards for farmers with disabilities in farmers day celebrations
