The Chief of Yawhima a suburb of Sunyani in the Sunyani East Municipality of the Bono Region, Nana Ansu Ababio II has made a passionate appeal to the youths of Kotokrom who have taken the law into their hands and blocked a section of the road with blocks and heavy stones to remove them before something bad happen.
The youth have done this due to the dusty nature of the road
According to him, dust is not static as mud and always travels far because it is the wind that carries it along.
Nana Ababio II continued that though the contractor has left the site and also failed to water the road especially Kotokrom and Yawhima township, that does not warrant the youths to block sections of the dual road with heavy stones that could cause accidents and worsen the situation should any Vehicle mistakenly over take the other and end up crashing into the stones. According to him this may result in an accident which could lead to loss of lives especially at day time when people are on their businesses.
Some youths in Kotokrom on Sunday, October 6, 2022, blocked the road with heavy blocks and stones to express their displeasure at the contractor’s inability to water the abandoned road.
According to them, the dusty nature of the stretch is affecting their health and livelihoods. They lamented the neglect of the road, accusing the contractor of abandoning the site.
Confirming the incident to Daily Searchlight’s reporter, Collins Fosu Appiah, Assembly Member for Kotokrom Electoral Area, Dramani Mahama noted that on Sunday he had a distress call that some youths have blocked the road preventing motorists who access it. He said that so he rushed to the scene and intervened and after he managed to calm them down they came to an agreement that instead of blocking the entire road, they should block one of each side to help reduce unnecessary over taking and speeding in the Kotokrom township.
He revealed that he earlier he appealed to the contractor’s foreman to fetch them sand so that through communal labour they created small speed ramps in the town to reduce unnecessary over taking and speeding so as to reduce the dust but appeal did not yield any positive result.
Mr Dramani called on authorities to intervene so the contractor returns to site as soon as positive and water the road especially Kotokrom and Yawhima township now that we are entering the dry season.
President Akufo-Addo in September, 2020, re-awarded the construction of road that the then Mills administration started in 2012 but failed to complete it by extending it to Yawhima. The 15 km road has been abandoned for almost seven months without knowing the whereabouts of the contractor.
