North Carolina Courage defender Carson Pickett will join the US women’s national team in Europe, replacing Emily Fox as she follows concussion protocols.
Fox earned the start against England at Wembley on Friday, but left the pitch after just 22 minutes when taking a hit to the head. In order to ensure her safety, the defender was placed under strict concussion protocols that bar her from playing in the upcoming friendly against Spain.
Now, Pickett joins as the American side look to rebound from their 2-1 defeat to the Lionesses when meeting Spain in Pamplona on Tuesday. The player has just one cap with the national team, featuring in the June 28th match against Colombia in Utah.
Born without a left forearm, she stands as the first player with a limb difference to feature for the USWNT.
Her call up comes after serving as a standout for the Courage throughout the 2022 NWSL campaign, making the league’s Team of the Month on three occasions. Though the Courage missed out on the final slot for the playoffs, she concluded the season with one goal and led the NWSL with six assists.
