Twenty-nine Ghanaian men who were tricked to follow some Chinese nationals to Kinshasa in the Congo are pleading with the government of Ghana to help them come back home.
They say that their passports have been confiscated by their Chinese friends and they are being held indoors by their captors somewhere in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The men, who are largely unskilled, stated that a few months ago, they were approached by some Chinese nationals with the offer of work in Congo.
“They promised us very lucrative terms so we decided to go with them,” one of them said in an interview with the Daily Searchlight.
They said that soon after they arrived in Kinshasa, their Chinese friends seized our passports.
“We have been here for some months, and all this while, our passports are with them,” they said.
They said that three days ago, the Chinese hurriedly gave them their passports during a visit to their factory by Immigration Officials.
“But as soon as the Immigration Officers left, they seized the passports again. And now they are refusing to return the documents to us,” they said.
They called on the government to help them return home.
“All that we want the government to do, is to help us get back home,” they said.
Asked why they have not contacted the Consulate in Kinshasa, they stated that they have been calling, but the calls are never answered.
“They do not pick up calls at the Ghana Consulate,” they said.
