Sandema (U/E), June 7, GNA -Dr Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsi, the Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has disclosed that the Region has recorded one COVID-19 case at Paga in the Kassena-Nankana West District.
He said the Region consistently recorded zero cases for the past one month, “But just two days ago, we had one confirmed case in Paga. COVID-19 is not gone.”
Dr Dzotsi noted that the cases were on the increase, and said Greater Accra and Kumasi had recorded 375 active cases, and advised residents in the Region to get vaccinated.
“Please take two doses and the booster. Now the vaccines are everywhere,” the Regional Director admonished residents.
Dr Dzotsi made the disclosure when he took his turn to address staff and management of the Builsa North Municipal Assembly on issues of health as part of the Regional Minister’s visit to the Municipality to inspect ongoing projects and interact with staff and management of the Assembly.
Speaking on challenges of the Sandema Hospital, the facility’s Administrator, Mr Prosper Asandem said the Hospital was not originally constructed as a Hospital, and therefore had infrastructural and other challenges.
He said the current major challenge of the Hospital was the lack of a plant to power the Hospital when there was power outage in the Municipality.
He said the over 30years power plant which served the Hospital, had broken down, and the Hospital was usually plunged into darkness anytime there was power outage, “As at now, we are using a very small generator which is not able to power the entire Hospital.”
Mr Asandem said the capacity of the generator could not power the entire facility, and compelled management to alternate its use between units with emergency cases.
“If a unit has an emergency, we direct it there and if another unit gets an emergency, we redirect it there,” Mr Asandem said.
He said the situation created lots of inconveniences, and appealed for a new power plant to solve the frequent power fluctuation in the Hospital which hindered effective service delivery.
“Apart from the generator, for the past three years, the units that are of significance to the Municipality are the X-ray Department and the mortuary facility.
“In our own small way, we managed to contact a Contractor to put up a mortuary facility, but the Contractor was not able to install cold system in the facility so is still not functioning as a mortuary,” the Hospital’s Administrator said.
He appealed to Government, Non-Governmental Organizations, philanthropists and individuals to assist the Hospital with a cold system to enable the mortuary function.
