The Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Searchlight Mr. Ken Kuranchie has accused the Member of Parliament of Bawku Central, Dr. Isaac Adongo, of demonstrating extreme ignorance in his position that Ghana is not a major consumer of wheat.
Speaking on the program ‘Adwenekasa’ on Original 91.9 FM on Monday afternoon, Mr. Kuranchie said that Hon. Isaac Adongo’s challenge of Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia on his assertions with regard to wheat imports from Ukraine and Russia to Ghana demonstrated fearsome ignorance.
Speaking in a radio interview with regard to the economic statement made by Dr. Bawumia last week, Hon Adongo said;
“This is a man who says that the main reason why food prices are up, is hat Ghana imports 30 percent of its wheat requirements from Ukraine. When was the last time you ate any food prepared by wheat? Is wheat our staple food in Ghana?”
Responding to this statement on Original FM, Mr. Kuranchie stated, “This is fearsome ignorance. Does Hon Adongo not know that all flour prepared and sold in Ghana for the use of baking bread, is made fom flour? Does his children eat bread? If they do, then I am telling him that the flour that was used for the bread, is made from wheat. And bread is a major, major staple in Ghana.”
Mr. Kuranchie also wondered if Mr. Adongo was aware that wheat is also primarily used for preparing chicken feed and certain other animal feeds.
“There is a product called wheat bran, made from wheat. It is used in poultry feed. So any time he is eating eggs, he ought to know that he is consuming a product produced by wheat. Does he know the amount of tonnage of wheat necessary to feed the poultry industry in Ghana?” Mr. Kuranchie asked.
He wondered why the trade and agriculture experts of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for which Dr. Adongo professes to speak for, had not come out to correct Dr. Adongo’s embarrassing gaffe.
Mr. Kuranchie also took issue with Hon. Adongo on his constant and derogatory references to Dr. Bawumia as ‘Walewale Adam Smith’.
“I have always wondered why this insult from Dr. Adongo, given the fact that he comes from the same background, and professes similar expertise on the economy to Bawumia. Is he saying that Walewale or Bawku cannot produce an Adam Smith? Does he know the number of experts in all fields produced by Walewale or Bawku? Why is he insulting his own like that?” Mr. Kuranchie wondered.
